Western Basilisk (Basiliscus galeritus)
When I visited Ecuador, I had already seen all the other Basiliscus species, so this last one was high on my most-wanted-Ecuadorian-species list. We missed them in Mindo, where they aren't too hard to find, due to too much rain and too little sun. Then on this night hike, we saw a young one at the edge of the river that we were wading through. Unfortunately, it also saw us, and dove into the water before I could get a photo. We tried to catch it as it swam rapidly upstream but it eluded our attempts. About twenty minutes later my guide Frank spotted this big adult sleeping on a huge leaf. I was ready to get a picture, but my lens was completely fogged (probably from all the river-wading). I warmed my lens with my flashlight for about ten minutes until it was at least capable of taking a half-fogged photo, and began to sneak closer to the lizard. Unfortunately, it saw me (this seems to be a recurring theme) and started inching away. I got this one terrible photo just before it leapt off of the leaf and hit the ground running into the thick forest.
