Bothriechis nitidus
—
Ecuadorian Eyelash Viper
Also known as:
Ecuadorian Eyelash-Viper
Bothriechis nitidus was originally described (as "Lachesis nitidus") in 1859. Later it was lumped into the widespread species Bothriechis schlegelii, typically called "Eyelash Viper" or "Eyelash Palm-Pitviper" due to the enlarged pointy scales above the eyes. In 2024 Arteaga et al revalidated it as a species distinct from B. schlegelii. Later in 2024 Reyes-Velasco et al rejected this revalidation. As I write this, the Reptile Database still lists it as a distinct species, but who knows what tomorrow might bring.
