We had searched for some little Brookesia leaf chameleons at Analamazaotra in the previous few days, but didn't have any luck there. At Anjaha, we searched and searched through the dry leaf litter to no avail, and had basically given up when one of the local guides came over with a big smile on his face and this little fellow in hand.

I haven't been able to come up with even a good guess as to which Brookesia species this is. It looks fairly similar to the B. stumpffi that we saw at Ankarana, but that species is known only from the north and far west. In addition, the horizontal spines on this chameleon extend onto the tail, which is not the case for B. stumpffi. The only Brookesia species that Glaw and Vences show near this area are B. superciliaris and B. nasus, but both of those species have quite distinctive appearances. I can't even find mention of a species whose description is a close match for this one, regardless of location. Perhaps this is an undescribed species. Please send me mail if you know more.

My wife Monica Rua took the picture of this chameleon in my hand.

Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this trip to Madagascar.
