Dendropsophus sp
—
unidentified species
These little yellow Dendropsophus populated the low vegetation growing from a shallow swampy area near our lodge. We saw a bunch of them, but most were too far away for decent photos. This is the only one that was close enough to the bridge/trail to photograph well. The others were even more pure yellow, without the prominent dark brown spot. My excellent herpetologist guide Amanda Quezada thought they might be an unusual-looking population of Dendropsophus rhodopeplus, but was not confident. A knowledgeable iNaturalist identifier believed this one to be one of D. leucophyllatus, D. triangulum, or D. reticulatus (the three of which are closely related). But the colors on the hands and feet don't match the descriptions in Amphibians of Ecuador of D. triangulum or D. reticulatus, and D. leucophyllatus doesn't seem to be found in Ecuador. So I guess its specific identity will remain a mystery for now.
