Oophaga sylvatica
—
Little Devil Poison Frog
This species is the largest of the 50+ types of poison frogs in Ecuador. And with such a charming name, too!
Across its not particularly large range in Ecuador, this species is represented by a dazzling array of color and pattern variations. But all of the ones in the population we saw were the same basic color and pattern. Some had more and smaller red spots on a dark background, where others had fewer and larger red spots, but they all looked approximately the same. Individuals in other Ecuadorian populations of this species can have light blue spotty legs, or nearly uniformly tan bodies, or very large yellowish spots, among other appearance differences.
